H.H. Asquith, considered the founder of the British welfare state, was the prime minister of the United Kingdom who led the British Empire into the monumental debacle that was World War I. The son of a cloth merchant, Henry Herbert Asquith was born in Morley, Yorkshire and attended Balliol College, Oxford.
