For the last thirty years, one artist has been evading the watchful eyes of the KGB, locking himself in a studio to work on a particular painting. He is Nikolai Shin (Shin Soon-Nam), a 2nd generation Korean-Russian immigrant, and the painting is ?equiem,?composed with his paintbrush to soothe the souls of innocent Koreans who were massacred during Stalin? 1937 forced migration policy. Sky-blue Hometown centers on this masterpiece of Mr. Shin, who finally received deserved world acclaim after reaching his golden years. The film brings to life the oppressed memory of the history of Korean-Russian forced relocation policy. Stalin? forced migration policy took away the lives and the hopes of countless Korean-Russians. For more than 20 days, many children and old-folks died on a train that was without any dining or lavatory facilities, as the rest were abandoned in the wilderness. The sad fates of those forced to board relocation trains, without even knowing the reason for such, do not step aside from then nine year-old Shin. The large canvas of ?equiem?painted in heavy outlines of Koreans dressed in ocher-colored Korean costumes, comes alive through the survivors?recollections. These recollections, told by the elders with wrinkled faces and quivering eyes, are filled with painful history of Korean-Russian relations.
