In the 1860s Alaska and Finland were both parts of the Russian tsarist state. Simon, a Finnish mining engineer, buys a 10-year-old Alaskan-born Indian and decides to bring him to Finland. The girl named Tsamo is baptized and Simon begins to teach her the manners of Europe. The girl thinks she's married to Simon, but when Simon marries a woman of his age and fit, Tsamo no longer understands. Simon is forced to send the girl away, but the battle over Tsamo's identity takes an unexpected turn.
