The three main heroes of the movie are an escaped convict, a suicidal intellectual, and a former actress with heroine addiction, turned prostitute. They meet accidentally in the streets of contemporary St Petersburg, and they set on a journey to the island Belyj in search of a rainbow - or a treasure that is supposedly been buried there since the war. The islanders are a rather unfriendly bunch and soon they start hunting the unwelcome visitors. Only the escaped convict survives the massacre but, shut in the throat, he loses his voice. The most powerful scene comes towards the end of the movie. The convict is holding the Bible and appears to be praying, while only making babbling sounds, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." The closest analogy to a well-known movie would be Deliverance except Svetozarov's imagery is much more suggestive and powerful. As with other Svetozarov's films, the plot is just a medium to create mythological imagery. In the tradition of aestetics of the "Leningrad school" his movies are loaded with apocalyptical realism, existential nihilism, and macabre "Dostoyevschina." While brutal and violent, his movies reflect Russian spiritualism and mysticism and metaphorically speak of Russian destiny. This movie has never been released on DVD. This VHSRip is hard to find even in Russia.
