Jackie Cochran, renowned woman aviator of the 1930's commanded an experimental group of women who were trained to fly American military planes during WW2. The WASP, women Air Force Service Pilots flew every type of aircraft the US Air Force had and proved themselves equal to their male counterparts. In secret these women flew some of the most powerful weapons of WW2 and dealt with social equality long before don't ask don't tell. But after a series of suspicious accidents, a smear campaign and bruised egos the program was abruptly canceled before the end of the war. Over 60 years later the women pilots were finally recognized as veterans and presented the Congressional gold medal.
