Terochhiri Village on the banks of Kittonkhola river is the site of a village fair organized by the affluent Idoo Contractor. The fair attracts large number of people. The shopkeepers set up their stalls, the Bedey community comes by with their herbs and other local remedies, there is gambling and a liquor vend and above all there is a Jatra party to stage their shows. The Jatra party has grown around the pretty Banasribala, a former prostitute now turned actress, Rabi Das the lead actor and Chaya Ranjan, another young actor. Both are in love with Bonosri, who also dreams of settling down. Shonai, a villager who owns a small piece of land in a nearby village, come to the fair and at once falls for Dalimon, a pert and pretty Bedey woman. Dalimon seems to reciprocate, but they belong to two different cmmunities. Idoo Contractor lusts for Bonosri, actively supported by the Jatra owner Subol, who would sell his grandmother for money.
