Newly launched Elston Films has acquired Justin Kremer’s Black List script “Bury the Lead,” Variety has learned exclusively. The journalism drama will be produced by Elston Film principals Kevin Cooper, DeAnna Cooper, Billy Dec and Kat Stephens. Madhouse Entertainment principal Adam Kohlbrener will executive produce. Kremer’s screenplay centers on a talented journalist who, in his life-long quest for a Pulitzer Prize, fabricates the truth to create a compelling murder story. When his concocted conspiracy becomes real, right and wrong become entangled as he fights for his safety, career and family before time runs out. “Once again, this shows the value of the Black List as a threshold for the great screenplays to find homes in non-traditional ways,” Kolbrenner said. “De, Kevin, Billy and Kat are an incredibly passionate creative team and the perfect partner for this film.” Elston Films, based in Chicago, brings together the Coopers, who are former studio executives, with entrepreneurs Dec and Stephans. Producers plan to start shooting later this year. “Bury the Lead” made the 2013 Black List of top unproduced screenplays. Kremer’s script “McCarthy,” which follows the Senate career of Joseph McCarthy, made the 2012 Black List. Kremer’s deal was negotiated by attorney Stephen Clark of Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman, and Molly C. Hansen of Serra Verde Law representing Elston Films. Kremer is represented by Jon Cassir at CAA and Kolbrenner at Madhouse Entertainment.
