Kunjunni is the man of the story. Entering college， communism is fashionable and he takes it up naturally. Kerala becomes the first cit y to democratically elect a communist party. Under new power， the family land is given away. Years later， he runs a printing press， still believing communism will cure all social ills. While his comrades prod him to be more revolutionary， Kunjunni gets disenchanted by party politics and joins a Maoist faction. When police stations and landlords are attacked， he becomes suspect and is arrested， marking another critical departure in his life.
