Ji-ung fears being left alone with his sick mother. His father got busier since his mother took ill and his secret pet cat is his only comfort. One day, his mother suddenly recovers and the cat suddenly disappears. Ji-ung remembers the neighborhood housewives saying eating a cat cures illnesses. Ji-ung is a cheerful kid who gets along well with his classmates but his family situation is far from cheerful. His father has eyes only for his mother because she is seriously ill, so he doesn't get enough attention from them. Instead, he pours his affection on a kitten. One day, his mother miraculously recovers and the cat disappears. Ji-ung remembers the neighborhood housewives saying that a cat is a wicked creature and eating one cures your illness. Just as children and adults have different perceptions toward cats, the movie shatters the preconception that a child automatically craves the love of his parents. To Ji-ung, his moaning mother who tosses and turns in bed due to her illness is a scary existence. The time he has to spend alone with her once his father goes to work is terrifying for him. To Ji-ung, the cat is a much more affectionate subject. In a way, his mother's recovery emphasizes his parting with the cat. Consequently, he may resent his mother but soon realizes this is not the case. This is how innocent children grow up. Cat is a film about such innocence. (Huh Namwoong)
