Four friends decide to embark on a road trip after burying the group's fifth member. The four friends are also the film's four directors, and 'Road to Ythaca' is just as much a personal, existential and semi-mythological journey, as it is a trip along the beaten path to the title's fabled destination, which is a must-see for all tourists – or to some dramatic climax. Not that much is said along the way. The individual situations stand for themselves, and are all the stronger for it; the group that gets lost on its drive through the desert in the middle of the night and sings songs in the glow of the headlights, a trippy dream journey. Fans of the underrated 'desert film' and the American veteran director Monte Hellman will nod approvingly at the silent, mutual understanding between the friends. An 'Road to Ythaca' is a cinematic, semi-documentary and deeply personal experiment, which makes you wish that other filmmakers would take just as many and large risks.
