In his latest documentary Bear Islands, filmmaker and writer Martin Ryšavý returns to Siberia, this time heading for the remote Nizhnekolymsky district. Images of a group of local men travelling through the snow-covered landscape to an abandoned weather station are interwoven with fragments revealing the history of the facility and its former residents. This poetic portrait of the region, a place where time has stood still, was one of five films nominated for a Czech Lion in the documentary category.
